Haley
came downstairs at 9.40pm dressed up to go out. I told
her that it was late and stood between her and the front
door as I tried to persuade her not to go out. I told
Haley that we were concerned about her and asked her
if she was going to see Paul, but she would not say.
As
Haley still insisted that she was going out I reminded
her that she had to be back by 10pm, and what the consequences
would be if she did not return on time.
I
decided that I could not do anything further to stop
her and that physical restraint was not justified.

Discussion
In such incidents it is important to record detailed factual
information and the actions taken to try to persuade the young
person not to leave the unit. It is also important to record
your judgements where a decision not to intervene further
is made.
In this situation it could be helpful to make a note of what
Haley was wearing in case she had to be reported missing at
a later stage.
If you were recording using the model for recording in residential
care in Write Enough, the fact that Haley left the unit at
9.40pm should be briefly recorded in the unit log. This should
direct the reader to the 'Active File' where a detailed record
of the incident would be made in Haley's personal records.
These would be placed in Haley's individual file at a later
date.
