Clip four

Background

Social Services have received an anonymous referral from a neighbour complaining about Lorraine neglecting her children. The neighbour said that she heard the children screaming and 'bumps and thuds'. She also said that Lorraine 'never seems to feed them', they are 'dirty and badly dressed' and that she does not think that Lorraine is 'all there. She is definitely a bit slow'.

Exercise one

For this exercise you will need a copy of some detailed records or your agency's Initial Assessment format or the Initial Assessment Record produced by the Department of Health to support the implementation of the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (2000).

The family is unknown to social services. In response to the anonymous referral from the neighbour the practitioner has been asked to complete an initial assessment. The visit to Ms Whitchurch Lee and Shane is the start of the initial assessment.

In practice during the initial assessment other agencies would be contacted and some of the issues raised in the video would be explored in more detail with Ms Whitchurch. However, for this exercise, based on the video clip, record this visit with respect to Lee using the domains and dimensions of the Assessment Framework. Stop when you have completed the summary.
